Coat of arms of Šumskas

decoration

The history of the settlement of Šumskas began in the 17th century, while the Laukininkai Manor, located in the town of Šumskas, is mentioned as early as the 16th century. In 1696, the owners of Šumskas Manor, Mykolas Rapolas Šumskis and his wife Halina Šumska, built a wooden church and a monastery in the town and settled Dominican monks there. This event is considered the beginning of the town of Šumskas.

The present brick Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Šumskas was constructed between 1767 and 1789. It was consecrated in 1789 in honor of St. Michael the Archangel.

The coat of arms of Šumskas is the second coat of arms in the Kalveliai Eldership, the first being the coat of arms of Kalveliai, which symbolizes blacksmithing motifs.

The coat of arms depicts, on a blue field, a silver representation of the façade of the Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Šumskas. In 2026, Šumskas will commemorate its 330th anniversary. The origins of the town are closely linked to the Church of St. Michael the Archangel, whose founding in the 17th century is considered the beginning of the town. Therefore, the façade of this church is depicted on the coat of arms as a symbol of the town’s origins and spiritual heritage.

In Christian tradition, blue symbolizes the sky, purity, divinity, truth, steadfastness, and fidelity. It is also associated with depictions of the Blessed Virgin Mary, particularly from the 15th century onward, when she is often portrayed wearing a blue mantle. Silver in heraldry signifies water, purity, virtue, and loyalty.

The creator of the coat of arms is the artist Rolandas Rimkūnas.
