On 16th of February a commemoration of the Day of Restoration of Lithuania’s Independence – one of the most important dates in the path of statehood of our country took place in Nemenčinė.
"It is great to be able to celebrate this wonderful day in a renovated city square, where the Lithuanian flag will fly, children will run and play, and we will all be able to hold celebrations. It's always great to celebrate one's birthday or the birthday of a loved one, but it's something special to celebrate the birthday of all of us together.
I hope that the spirit of February 16th, passed on from generation to generation, will survive and live on, and that we will know how to appreciate what we have and have built. To protect, cherish and grow it. Today is a day when we can look back and reflect on what we have achieved in our families, in our community, in our municipality, in our country. We are building it all together. So let us preserve and nurture it, so that future generations can be proud of what we can enjoy today. Have a wonderful birthday of Lithuania!" – said Robert Duchnevič, Mayor of Vilnius District Municipality, addressing the people gathered in the Nemenčinė Town Square, and expressing his delight at the fact that the residents are willingly joining such events and encouraging their friends and neighbours to come along.
To commemorate this special occasion, in the morning at the Nemenčinė Cultural Centre, painting classes for families with young children were held together with painter Božena Naruševič. At noon, the Lithuanian flag was raised by the soldiers of the General Adolfas Ramanauskas Combat Training Centre in Nemenčinė Square during the national anthem, after which all the gathered people were invited to take part in a ceremonial walk through the streets of Nemenčinė carrying the renewed 150-metre-long Lithuanian flag.
For the first time the 250-metre flag covered the streets of Nemenčinė in 2016, making it a beautiful tradition to the city.
The celebration was also attended by the Head of Administration Vladislav Kondratovič, Vice-Mayor Algis Vaitkevičius, members of the Vilnius District Municipal Council and others. Councilors Daniel Ilkevič and Vaidas Augūnas wished all the participants to be civic-minded and pointed out that it is only through hard and persistent work and faith in the future of the country that freedom can be preserved and prosperity can be achieved.
The celebration was crowned with a festive concert in Nemenčinė Square, which featured songs performed by the most popular Lithuanian operatic pop vocal tercet "el Fuego".
The event was organised by the Nemenčinė Cultural Centre.
The project is partially funded by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania.
