Further population growth is recorded in Vilnius District. Last year, the population grew by almost 2,000 officially registered new residents. According to the latest estimates of the Registry Center (2024, January 1), the number of residents reaches more than 116.5 thousand.
"We are delighted to see a growing number of residents. Such positive demographic trends motivate us to increase the volume of work and to move forward even faster, ensuring the well-being of everyone - those who already live here and those who are new to the district," says Robert Duchnevič, Mayor of the Vilnius District Municipality.
According to him, the increasing development and improvement of the district's infrastructure, the lower tax burden, the intensive management of localities, and the neighbouring capital city are contributing factors to the population growth.
"As we grow our population, we also have ambitions - to meet the challenges in education, to meet the demand for public services, to initiate infrastructural change in rapidly developing areas. Taking and implementing these and other decisions is a common challenge for both the administration of the municipality and the council. In addition, the capital city with its labour market and services is also nearby. This determines people's choice to move closer to it too. This is why it is important to maintain close cooperation with Vilnius City Municipality," says R. Duchnevič.
According to the State Enterprise Centre of Registers, the municipality's population grew to 116,579 through 2023.
In 2022, a total of 114,634 inhabitants declared their place of residence in Vilnius District Municipality. That year saw a record of annual population growth with 5,806 new residents.
It is not the first year that the fastest demographic growth has been recorded in the Avižieniai eldership, where almost 17,000 inhabitants declared their place of residence last year, with about 1,400 new inhabitants settling there during the year. The elderships of Riešė (+469), Nemėžis (+244), Rudamina (+170), Mickūnai (+134) and Zujūnai (+127) also prevailed in the growth of the number of new residents.
The most densely populated settlements in Vilnius District are Nemenčinė city (4,688), Riešė village (4,141), Skaidiškės village (4,112), Rudamina village (3,815), Pagiriai village (3,815).
